Ever heard of lucky girl syndrome? Trust me, it's real, and some of us got it at birth. Promotion? Naturally. New car? Duh! But blessed with an oval face shape? Come on, save some blessings for the rest of us!

Yep, that's right—according to the experts, when it comes to bone structure, you've won the genetic lottery. And that's because oval face shapes are the most versatile of the bunch, meaning you suit many different hairstyles, from longer lengths and layers to blunt bobs and even bangs.

That said, if you're still debating the big chop in fear that it won't flatter your features (read: paralysed by visions of a previous haircut gone rogue), fear not, because we've done the groundwork for you. Wetapped top hairstylists Samantha Cusick and Jordanna Cobella, who have decoded exactly which cuts will enhance your already very blessed features.

But before proceeding, a reality check: Here at Cosmo Beauty, we're not in the business of face-shape policing. If you want the haircut, get the haircut. Fundamentally, there are no hard and fast rules! That said, if you are curious about how to highlight your cheekbones or soften angles, you're in exactly the right place. So, please, continue on...

The best hairstyles for oval face shapes

Japanese bob

"The Japanese bob is the cool girl’s answer to minimalism. It’s sharp, intentional, and beautifully precise. Think glassy, jaw-skimming, and so clean it almost feels architectural. It’s not trying too hard, but it knows exactly what it’s doing," says Samantha Cusick.

Essentially, this is a power cut. The blunt, jaw-hugging line mirrors the natural symmetry of an oval face, letting your bone structure do the talking. With no heavy layering to distract, the precision is the point – sleek, controlled, and quietly confident.

The soft shag

The 70s are back, bb, and the soft shag works perfectly for those with oval face shapes – all texture, movement, and that perfectly imperfect finish. Soft, airy layers and a loose fringe keep things feeling light, not heavy or overworked. As Samantha puts it, "it’s all about texture, movement, and that slightly lived-in feel."

On an oval face, this undone shape adds interest rather than chaos; "you can afford to add width and texture without disrupting the balance. It gives the cut personality." Just don't skip styling. Sam recommends using a texture spray or mousse to bring it to life.

Ghost layers

Short hair isn't for everyone, so if you're reluctant to part with your lengths, consider this your permission slip to keep it... Just with better tailoring. Invisible (or ghost) layers are all about subtlety. Think: soft, seamless shaping that enhances your natural texture without veering into obvious, choppy territory.

As Jordanna Cobella explains, "It’s just about refining the shape," adding that "long, invisible layers… enhance your natural texture rather than obvious, choppy sections." On an oval face, it's less about correction and more about enhancement: "you're just elevating what’s already there."

The collarbone cut

The collarbone bob (also known as a lob/long bob) is that sweet spot between short and long that feels polished without looking overgrown. As Samantha says, "it's a classic for a reason."

The length is key here. It "doesn’t cut the face off at an awkward point," but instead elongates and complements an oval face's natural proportions. Even better, it's endlessly versatile! Wear it sleek, waved, tucked, or air-dried; they all work.

Curtain bangs

Not ready for a full chop? Curtain bangs are the low-commitment refresh that still makes it look like you've had your hair done. Unlike a full fringe that can sometimes feel heavy or blocky, this style is soft, cener-parted, and blends seamlessly with the rest of the hair.

As Samantha puts it, the key is a fringe that "tapers into the rest of your hair" rather than sitting as a separate block. On an oval face, it's all upside; "it adds softness and draws attention to the eyes and cheekbones without closing the face in." A quick bend with straighteners or a round brush gives that effortless sweep, but regular trims are non-negotiable.

Soft Parisian bob

On an oval face, the Parisian bob is a flattering tweak: it "softens the natural symmetry and adds a bit of edge without feeling too ‘done,’" says Jordanna. However, she recommends avoiding anything too blunt or wide and instead, says to opt for a "choppy Bardot-style fringe that blends into the rest of the cut."

Style-wise, "let it move," Jordanna says. A slight bend or even air-dried texture works best; it shouldn't feel overly polished.

Hairstyles to avoid if you have an oval face shape:

As mentioned, when it comes to oval faces, there really aren't any hard "don'ts". Instead, it's more about being "mindful with balance," says Jordanna. "It always comes back to tailoring," adds Samantha.

That said, styles that are too long and completely one-length with no movement, especially flat hair, can "start to drag the face down slightly and lose that natural shape." Both Jordanna and Samantha caution against overly heavy, blunt fringes. If they're "too wide or dense, they can dominate the face and take away from the natural balance."

So, remember: soften the details and let your hair move! You don't always need a dramatic overhaul because sometimes, subtlety is the boldest statement you can make.
